Greetings!
A warm welcome to the Positive Finance Journey blog! Like many things else in life, getting our finances in order is a recurring theme and not a one-off event. Being successful with managing our money can make us or break us. Moreover, it is a huge topic so getting started can often be confusing or daunting, especially since it is not formally taught in school.
I myself was a good example. Even though I was schooled in the field of business and finance, I neglected my own personal finances for the first few years of my working career as I was often overwhelmed by work and life (*cough* you may find my excuse familiar). I thought so long as I have a job and receive regular income, my finances should sort itself out. However, that can’t be further away from the truth. Going through life’s key milestones – getting married, buying a house and starting a family – meant that my savings account was not growing (even at times dwindling).
I had a wake-up call when I decided to leave the corporate world to pursue greater meaning in my work by moving into the space of financial advisory. As a self-employed individual, I had to forgo the certainty of receiving a monthly pay check (I do miss receiving a regular pay check) as advisory income in Singapore is largely commission-driven. It also forced me to take charge of my personal finances (walk the talk) and manage my money prudently so as to avoid financial disaster. Looking back, it was probably one of my best decisions made otherwise I might not have taken my personal finances seriously!
Since then, I have also learnt about the importance of improving our financial literacy through reading widely and gathering insights from different sources, be it books, online blogs and YouTube videos (different authors and creators have different perspectives). I look forward to documenting my experiences and thoughts on the topic of personal finance and life (while navigating my own) in my future posts. Do stay tuned!
